William “Bill” H. Carey passed away peacefully on June 20, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late Samuel and Dorothy Carey. Bill grew up in the house his grandparents purchased and eventually raised his children in the same house. He graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1962.
At the age of 18, Bill began working at the Middlesex County Office of Engineering and retired as a civil engineer after 38 years of service, ensuring county roadways were safe and well-maintained, baseball diamonds and tennis courts were built in Middlesex County parks, and government buildings were up to code. He also had his land surveying license for many years. He never graduated from college, but passed every state engineering test with flying colors – often having one of the highest scores in the state. After retiring, Bill moved to the Poconos, and enjoyed the slower pace of living in Pennsylvania for the last 20 years.
Bill enjoyed numerous hobbies throughout his life. Bill loved antique cars and his life-long passion project was restoring a yellow 1939 De Luxe Coupe Ford, which he had owned since 1966. He also enjoyed shooting, participating in numerous shooting competitions (skeet, Steel Challenge, etc.) throughout his life. An avid reader, Bill was a prodigious patron of the North Brunswick Public Library, the Milltown Public Library, and later the Western Pocono Community Library, reading up to 100+ books a year. Bill very much enjoyed teaching people about the things he was passionate about. He was excellent at explaining complex topics in an easy to understand way and loved to see people learn and grow.
Above all, Bill was a great father to his two children (and later to his son-in-law). Bill loved to brag about all his kids’ accomplishments to whoever was willing (or unwilling) to listen. When they were children, he spent hours every week transporting them to various activities – often driving them to 2 or 3 events a day. He was their biggest cheerleader, firmly believing they could accomplish anything they set their mind to and he did all he could to make sure they had every opportunity.
Bill is survived by his children, Samuel Carey & Melissa (Dan) McGarvey, his soon-to-be grandson, William McGarvey, the mother of his children Ildiko Lovas Carey, his brother Roy (Donna) Carey, numerous nieces & nephews and many friends.
A church service will take place Saturday, June 29 th at 10:30am at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (where Bill was a member for many years) 568 Ryders Ln. East Brunswick, New Jersey, followed by a burial at Old Tennent Cemetery in Manalapan, New Jersey, with a luncheon to follow.
Private cremation has been entrusted to the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, Inc., 23 N 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
