Shirley E. Staples, 87, of the Middletown Home in Dauphin County was called to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa. Previously she was a lifelong resident of Stroudsburg/E. Stroudsburg, Pa. She was the loving widow of Gerald D. Staples Sr., with whom she shared 40 years of marriage and who was the love of her life. Born in Wind Gap, Pa., she was the daughter of Halsey and Hazel (Casebere) Melvin.
Shirley worked in the Radiology Department at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg for 35 years. She was a graduate of Stroudsburg High School class of 1954 and was a member of the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.
Shirley is survived by two daughters: Debra Staples Tingley and her husband Leslie C. Shultz Jr. of Bellfonte, Pa. and Julie A. Roksandic and her husband John of Elizabethtown, Pa. Shirley was preceded in death by her son Gerald D. Staples Jr. and a son in law Edwin VanLoan Tingley Jr.; eight grandchildren: Edwin III, Jordan, Drew, Alexandra, Brianne, Jacquelyn, Jessica and Gerald III and seven great grandchildren: Katherine, Rebekah, John, Emily, Donato, Atticus and Archer. Shirley was one of seven children. She is survived by her brother Edward Melvin and his fiancé Yvonne Smith and her sisters Gloria Jean Warner and Patricia Meno, all of East Stroudsburg. Shirley was preceded in death by her siblings Delores Detrick, Margaret Smith and Halsey Melvin Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, at 12:30pm at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home Inc. 23 N. 9th St. Stroudsburg, Pa. 18360. The family will receive friends from 11:30am until the time of the services at the funeral home.
