Nereida Luz Perez, 84, of East Stroudsburg, died peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at her home with her family by her side. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of Maria (Beato) Betances of Morningside, New York and the late Dioncio Betances.
Nereida was a devout Catholic and was always happy to attend multiple masses on a Sunday and during the week in order to allow her family members to share in her faith. She was very active at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Richmond Hill, Queens where she was part of St. Teresa’s Charismatic group prior to moving to the Poconos. Nereida took part in several missions trips with her church and priest taking her to visit Egypt, Israel, and Poland. In 2006, she traveled back to the Dominican Republic to attend a church and complete a promise she had made to God. She took time to call and keep in touch with her family every day and will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Along with her mother, she is survived by her daughter, Xiomara Perez-Betances and her husband, Juan Paulino; sons: Isidoro Perez and his wife, Nelly; Maximo Perez and his wife, Ramona; grandchildren: Yasmin Herrera and her husband, Daniel Herrera; Nicole Perez and Jordan; Victoria Perez; Maximo Perez, Jr.; Virginia Perez; Marissa Perez; Christian Perez; Jonathan Perez; great-grandchildren: Natalie and Sophia Spiegel; Noa and Savannah Herrera; Anaya, Anise, Cayden, Nevaeh, Infinity, Christian, Jr., Justin Perez; and Jayla Marcouix.
Fr. Gregory Reichlen will celebrate a mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 25, 2023 at 11:00 am, at the Church of St. John, 5171 Milford Road, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, 18302. Family will receive friends from 10:00 am to the time of service. Private cremation will follow. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, Inc, 23 North 9th Street, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania 18302.
