J. Richard Mathiesen Obituary

James Richard Mathiesen (better known as Dick Mathiesen), 91, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania passed away on March 6, 2026, at Spring Village in East Stroudsburg.  He was the loving husband of Antoinette “Dolly” (Caiazzo) Mathiesen with whom he shared over 70 years of marriage.  Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, he was a son of the late James S. and Anna O. (Svalesen) Mathiesen.

Dick was a 1952 graduate of Stroudsburg High School and received an Associate’s Degree from The Pennsylvania State University, Allentown. Dick was employed at the Patterson-Kelley Co. for 44 years. Starting his career as a draftsman, he later became head of the department. He helped to advance the company by promoting computer-assisted drafting (CAD) technology.

When not working, Dick enjoyed boating and water skiing well into his 70s.  In retirement, he enjoyed tinkering with antique automobiles, especially his 1931 Ford Model A. He and his wife were avid RV travelers and spent many vacations with family and good friends across the country. Dick was proud of his Norwegian heritage and was able to achieve a lifetime goal by traveling with Dolly to meet relatives and visit the birthplaces of his parents.

Dick served as Scoutmaster for Troop 83 and as Cubmaster for Pack 83 for the Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a committee member for the Minsi Trail Council BSA. Dick was a member of the Church of St. Luke in Stroudsburg and served for many years at the parish festival and did camera work for the weekly broadcasts of Sunday Masses from the Church of St. Luke.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his brother, Clifford and his wife Florence, his cousin Augusta Midthassel, and his sisters-in-law Edna Caiazzo and Judith Caiazzo. He is also survived by his sons: Steven Mathiesen and his wife, Carla; Scott Mathiesen and his wife, Claranne; Chris Mathiesen and his wife, Maria; James Mathiesen and his wife, Jacquelyn; grandchildren: Cynthia Mathiesen and her fiancé, Andrew Vanasse, Elizabeth Mathiesen; Thomas Mathiesen and his wife, Jasmyn; Kelly MacGregor and her husband, James; Jennifer Bartron and her husband, Tyler; Jessica Mathiesen; Ryan Mathiesen and his wife, Emily; James Mathiesen and his wife, Gabrielle; and Joshua Mathiesen; great grandchildren: Lukah, Murphy, Emmett, Nolan, William, Noe; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful to the neighbors who became close friends and assisted in his care in recent years.
