Hildegard "Hilde" Charlotte Appelt, 93, of Lancaster, PA, formerly of East Stroudsburg, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday Nov.18th, 2024, in the Lancaster Nursing & Rehab. Born in Berlin, Germany she was the daughter of Otto and Charlotte Redeske and the widow of Josef-her husband of 40 years.
Hilde immigrated from East Berlin to the USA in 1956 with her husband and settled in Queens, NY with a few dollars in their pockets and a dream. Graduating from a vo-tech school in Berlin, she was a seamstress in NYC, retiring in 1996. Hilde enjoyed knitting, crocheting, designing & sewing clothes from her own patterns. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking & baking what she harvested from the backyard (in Queens). In fall, making sauerkraut and helping her husband (in the earlier days) make wine from the four different Rhine River grapes grown on the side of their house in Queens. In her later years Hilde enjoyed teaching classes in knitting and sewing in her senior community. Seeing her grandchildren and great grandson were her greatest joys.
Hilde is survived by her daughter Gabriele (Jerry); four grandchildren: Joe, Mike, Rachael (Stephen) & Julianne and her great grandson Maaz-Josef, many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her siblings-Ursula, Brigitte & Manfred; her daughter Anna Maria, son-in-law Martin and granddaughter Rebecca.
Graveside services and burial will take place on Thursday Nov. 21, 2024, at 11:00am in St. Catherine’s Cemetery,1247 Drinker Turnpike, Covington Township, PA 18444. The Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home Inc. 23 N. 9th St. Stroudsburg, PA 18360 is in charge of the arrangements.
