Henry Scheaffel

Henry Michael Scheaffel passed away peacefully at home in the presence of loving friends and family members on August 19, 2026. He was 96 years young. Born to Frederick and Mary (Koheler) Scheaffel, he was predeceased by his siblings Frederick Scheaffel Jr. and Lucy LaForte, his wife MaryAnn (D’Agostino) in 2014 and sadly, by his only son, Henry “Skip” Scheaffel in 1978. A dedicated member of The National Guard, he would reminisce about his duties as a tank operator and mechanic and about the times his unit would travel over the Brooklyn Bridge to New York City by tank. He started his working career as a jeweler in his uncle’s business but then spent decades as a Tool and Die Maker in NY and NJ. He moved his family to New Jersey in the late 1950’s and raised his family of 6 children in Clifton NJ. He loved gatherings with family and friends, playing and teaching his children card games and at every opportunity, would dance from the first song to the last melody of the night. He is lovingly remembered for his sense of humor, willingness to lend a helping hand to all in need, his love for watching sports and rooting for the underdog and he enthusiastically adopted Rutgers University as his “college team”. He had an amazing connection with animals and would hand feed deer, neighborhood cats, ground hogs and even a stray racoon at times. His nicknames were Dr. Doolittle and MacGyver. He could fix anything (and did!) with some duct tape and a screwdriver!

He is survived by his five remaining children Carol Crispe, Sandi and her husband Len Viscito, Patti Nadeau, Jean and her husband David Kraemer and Meg Scheaffel. He will be remembered fondly by his two step-children Nancy and her husband John Brower and Russell D’Agostino. He leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Our family will be forever grateful for his loving care-givers Donna Marie Elgawly, Dorothy Thornton and Angel Rassias – “it takes a village”.

There will be no wake or funeral services; Henry will be cremated as per his request and his cremains interred alongside his son Skip in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Clifton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to A Pathway to Hope animal rescue group in North Haledon, NJ. www.apathwaytohope.org. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Joseph J.
