Frank Zaleski Obituary

Frank R. Zaleski passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday afternoon, March 31, 2026, shortly after celebrating his 101st birthday. A man of immense resilience, grit, and a celebrated zest for life, he left an indelible mark on his family and the communities he served.

Born in Mattituck, Long Island, New York, Frank was the son of the late Frank S. and Celica (Romanowski) Zaleski. His life was defined by early responsibility; at just 15 years old, as World War II was going on, he left school to run the family farm. While his father worked at a local grocery store to help the family make ends meet, Frank managed the agricultural operations during an era when potatoes sold for just $1.00 per 100 pounds.

This early labor laid the foundation for a highly successful career. Frank eventually transitioned from farming to house moving, turning a part-time winter job into a thriving enterprise. He became the renowned owner and operator of Mattituck House Movers, growing the business into a staple of Suffolk County’s professional landscape.

During his active business years on Long Island, Frank was deeply involved in his community. He was a dedicated member of the Mattituck Fire Department and the Riverhead Polish Home, where he also served on the Board of Directors.

Upon retirement, Frank moved to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he remained active as a devoted member of St. Matthew’s Church. His legendary physical and mental strength remained with him well into his twilight years; at age 98, he was still remarkably cutting his own fireplace wood. An avid deer hunter and lover of Polish music, he spent much of his retirement traveling from
Pennsylvania to Florida to attend dances. He lived a life of vigor and authenticity, punctuated by a final request for a shot of whiskey—truly going out in style.

Frank was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan. He is survived by his son, John, and his daughter, Susan. He also leaves behind three siblings: Edward (96), Kathryn (91), and Thomas (86).

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday April 8, 2026, at 10:00am at St. Matthews Catholic Church 78 Ridgeway St. East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
