Dr. Jesse Moore was a professor, Graduate Coordinator, and Department Chair in the Reading Department of East Stroudsburg University of PA. During his 34-year tenure, Dr. Moore collaborated with his colleagues Dr. Fred Fedorko, Dr. Beverly Fuller, Dr. Maureen McLaughlin, and Sue Watach to foster a culture of educational excellence in the Reading Department. As a result, ESU's Graduate Reading Program became the gold standard in Pennsylvania, graduating more than 100 students each year.
Jesse also devoted a great deal of time to working with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). His contributions there included collaborating on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Reading and Writing with colleagues that included Diane Skiffington Dickson, developing student state assessments, such as the PSSA, and reviewing and refining reading specialist certification requirements.
In addition to his work with PDE, Dr. Moore was very active in the Keystone State Reading Association (KSRA), along with his friend and colleague, Dr. Stephanie Romano. Jesse received the KSRA Celebrate Literacy Award and served as the organization's president from 1997 - 1998. He also worked extensively on the Governmental Relations Committee of KSRA and the International Reading Association (IRA). In these roles, he regularly presented testimony on literacy issues to the Pennsylvania State Board of Education and worked with IRA to influence federal policies related to reading. In addition, Dr. Moore consulted extensively with school districts throughout the United States, constantly striving to improve student literacy achievement.
Dr. Moore's lifelong professional goal was to be an inspirational teacher. He was successful in achieving that objective in myriad ways, including being named Distinguished Professor at ESU. Jesse was revered by his students and loved and respected by his colleagues. Dr. Moore was committed to modeling best practices in education and both he and the Reading Department faculty taught on the cutting edge of that knowledge.
The author of a variety of publications, Dr. Moore received his B.A. in English from Ursinus College, and his M.A. and Ed.D. in reading education from Lehigh University. Dr. Jesse Moore retired in 2008 and at that time was awarded Professor Emeritus status by ESU.
A public service celebrating Jesse's life will be held in summer 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
