Donald Small, 83, left us on August 23, 2025, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pennsylvania. His daughter, Donna Walid, and son, Allen Small, shared many of his final hours by his side after he suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke two weeks prior.
Donald was born December 30, 1941, in Angola, New York, to his parents Edward and Esther Mae Small. He belonged to Lake Shore Central High School’s Class of 1959 and completed his secondary education in Florida at the University Of Tampa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. While at UT, he met and married Elizabeth Redzig from Delaware Water Gap. They returned to the Poconos after college where he began his career teaching industrial arts and coaching wrestling at Pen Argyl High School. Once Donald and Elizabeth became parents in 1966, they relocated back to Tampa where Donald’s career pivoted to the insurance business. Over the next two decades, he developed the expertise that would define the rest of his career.
In the 1980’s, Donald brought the family back to Pennsylvania and, in the 1990’s, he proudly established an agency in Stroudsburg, specializing in insurance for commercial and small business clients. As a part of the business community, he supported the Pocono Mountain Chamber of Commerce and area Home Builders Associations. As an avid golfer, he became a founding member of the Great Bear Golf and Country Club. As a concerned citizen, he became Borough Council President of Delaware Water Gap. As a community-minded retiree, he joined the East Stroudsburg Elks Lodge where he forged valuable friendships with fellow lodge members. As a loyal college fraternity member, he enthusiastically attended and unconditionally supported events involving his Pi Kappa Phi brothers (and their families) resulting in more than 60 years of reunions, memories and unforgettable moments.
Donald was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (1942-2016) and as a beloved father and grandfather, he is survived by son Allen and his wife Becky, Donna and her husband Anwar, grandchildren Nora and Adam, and a treasured circle of friends.
A memorial visitation is open to family and friends on Tuesday afternoon, September 2, from 2-4pm at Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. Ninth St. Stroudsburg. Memorial service to follow at the Elks Lodge at 260 Washington St. East Stroudsburg. East Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elks Lodge in his name.
