Bernardino “Bernie” da Silva Mattos, 81, of Stroudsburg, Pa. passed away on Sunday September 3, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted, loving husband of Maria (Lourdes) Mattos with whom he had celebrated 53 years of marriage. Born in Pardilho, Portugal he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria (Lourdes) Mattos.
Bernie was a resident of the Stroudsburg area for the past 30 years, and prior to that, resided in the North Arlington, NJ area after emigrating from Portugal in the early 1970s. He was employed as a pipe foreman in the construction business for many years, and an honored Veteran of Special Forces of the Portuguese Army in the Portuguese Colonial War in Angola and Mozambique. A man of his word, he was affectionately known for his hardworking, honest, selfless, and generous heart. Over the years, he also supported various missions efforts in which he and wife Maria were involved with through their church of the Christian faith. He never faltered in his commitment to put the needs of others first, and the ripples of his kindness thoughtfulness and love will be felt and missed for many years to come.
In addition to his wife Maria, he is survived by 3 sons: David Mattos and his fiancé Dawn of Allentown, Pa., Daniel Mattos and his wife Nicole of Pen Argyl, Pa. and Philip Mattos of Stroudsburg, Pa. and a daughter Christina and her husband Tim Portoulas of Stroudsburg, Pa.; 6 grandchildren: Ethan, Isabella, Santino, Rosalie, Dominick and Eleni.
Funeral services will be held on Friday Sept. 8, 2023, at 10:30am at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home Inc. 23 N. 9th. St. Stroudsburg, Pa.with Pastor Angelo Pierri officiating. Burial will follow in the Stroudsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30am until the time of the services at the funeral home.
